(Really) It's Not All About Taste

I wish I could say every food I ever put in my mouth tasted fantastic. If you watch Food Network, or food shows on PBS's Create channel, or read cookbooks or food magazines or restaurant menus or online reviews, you'd think eating good tasting food is what we should all be striving for.

Even when researching healthy or ethical eating, it all comes back to "low fat, sugar free, cheap, local, fair trade Stuff... THAT TASTES GREAT!"

Y'know what? I live in the real world. I am here to stand up for the crazy belief that sometimes
it's not all about taste.

As my Grandmother* used to say, sometimes you have to eat "for health's sake."

Local liver and onions. Does it taste great? No, not really; at least not in the conventional sense.
Did I eat it. Sure I did. This blog will explore why, and how taste is only one part (and probably not the most important part) of making or securing and consuming food.
This is some pumpkin bread I made with whole wheat. It was not fluffy, it crumbled all over the place, it didn't cause a flavor explosion in my mouth.

But I ate it. Topped with a few chunks of leftover cheese, as an accompaniment to a bowl of somewhat sickly looking (but low fat, high fiber, homemade) root soup.

You know what? I don't think I even wish every food I put in my mouth tasted great. There are so many more aspects to explore - where food comes from, how it is grown / processed / seasoned, the nutritional value, the ethnic background and history of a recipe, etc.

I love ya, Michael Symon but really, if you ask me, taste isn't everything.

Let me know what you think.

*That's my Grandma Mildred's pic on the far right. She and Grandpa both worked in the garden and canned tomatoes like mad. Although she pretty much spoiled all us grand kids when we came over with late-night sundaes, I will get into some more healthy, historical recipes from her (including chili with macaroni in it, and Polish sausage soup.)
